  • "Every Mode of Transportation Loses Money": The Duke on the T

Among the gems is the quote cited above, "every mode of transportation loses money," which the Duke mined during a jeremiad about highway funding. Other topics include the shaky funding for the T—especially relevant considering proposed rollbacks on the new sales tax. The Duke supports a gas tax, noting "Five or six...

We also like how the lights on the top of the car and the light coming through the windows on the side guide our eye to...

  • Photo of the Day, January 12, 2010: Next Stop Wonderland

Image tagged Wonderland by Stephanie par PitiĆ© For the second day in a row, we’ll keep with the theme of anonymity in photographs. This one by Stephanie par PitiĆ© positions the Blue Line passenger front and center, but keeps the details of his face obscured. There’s something surreal and eerie, almost Kubrick-like about the way this photo draws together the anonymous passenger, the mustard yellow tones, and the glaring, florescent word, Wonderland....

Somebody thinks so. Rob Goodspeed, an urban planning student at MIT (and co-founder of our sister site DCist), has come up with an analysis of various cities' commutes by public transportation, biking, and walking. Our extensive (but expensive) commuter rail system (which goes "all the way to Rhode Island"!) and high percentage of people who walk to work (do you know anyone who walks to work? in the winter?) bring us to the forefront...

At least the Red Line (between Harvard and Alewife) will be closed January 2 to 4 for improvements, which we hope will avoid the need for additional headaches and shuttle service.
