Three Massachusetts sheriffs went directly to the federal government for help with dealing with illegal immigrants. McDonald Jr., and Worcester County Sheriff Lewis Evangelidis - felt the Patrick administration erred by not joining the Secure Communities program. James J. Auerbach, 68, and Thomas Frank Barnes, 38, both of Natick were arrested after postal inspectors in Shrewsbury and Natick and Framingham police found 14-15 pounds of marijuana. A drug-sniffing dog checked the package, which police say was sent in the mail from California, and police began surveillance outside the post office. Auerbah picked up the pot and brought it to the Natick apartment he shares with Barnes. Police arrested Auerbach there and found another six pounds of pot, $50,000 in cash and a gun. The drugs are reportedly worth about $100,00. Both men are charged with possessing marijuana with the intent to distribute and conspiracy.Auerbach faces additional weapons charges and has prior convictions. Auerbach was held on $10,000 bail and Barnes on $250 bail. [MetroWest Daily News]
Roxbury resident James Sanders, 18, pleaded not guilty to drug and assault charges after leading a Boston police officer on a foot chase following an apparent drug deal on Thursday. Sanders has no record. An officer approached Sanders after observing a drug deal. Sanders fled through Ramsay Park and was caught at Washington and Newcomb streets at which time the officer's weapon discharged. Sanders was treated at Boston Medical Center after being shot in the shoulder during the scuffle. He is charged with assault and battery on a public employee, resisting arrest, and possession of a Class B substance with intent to distribute. His bail was set at $300 cash. A hearing is set for July 11. [Globe]

Nathaniel A. Hudon, 31, of Danvers was arrested after kidnapping a Malden woman and leading police on a 20-mile pursuit after she escaped. Five State troopers eventually captured Hudon at a rest area after he climbed to the roof of the service plaza building in Charlton. The victim escaped at the Westborough rest area on the Mass. Pike despite the suspect's removal of the inside handles of his car. She kicked through the window. Police allege he was under the influence of cocaine. He'll be charged with kidnapping, assault and battery, operating under the influence of narcotics, operating a motor vehicle in endanger, failure to stop for police, speeding, and marked lane violation on Monday. A man with a machete allegedly stole $54 from a 14-year old snow-shoveling entrepreneur in Lynn. The teen spent Thursday morning clearing snow from driveways in the Highlands and lost his hard-earned cash on Essex Street around 12:30 p.m. when the suspect, described as a "light-skinned black male in his early 20s" by the boy, took it after pointing a machete at his chest.
The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) warned us about clearing snow from our roofs. Today, three roof collapses were reported.

-- An important piece of evidence has emerged in the case of a mutilated body found on a Milton street Monday. A note was found on the body and it showed what appeared to be the name "Delonte Tisdale" and a reference to "A lunch." There is also a scribbled signature and the date "10/19/2010."
-- Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said 31 arrests were made in a year-long organized crime and drug trafficking probe. Mark Rossetti, a reputed New England mob capo, was arrested for directing extortion and drug trafficking efforts. Winthrop's Darin Bufalino was arrested for allegedly working for Rossetti. Law enforcement officials recovered $1.3 million in cash, a kilo of heroin and 200 pounds of marijuana. [WCVB]

-- After allegedly stabbing somebody several times in Mattapan, a 29-year-old Boston man swiped a car equipped with Lojack, leading police precisely to his whereabouts, according to authorities. - Despite a determination by the National Park Service that the Nantucket Sound can be listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Obama administration signaled a resolution to the nine-year dispute over the Cape Wind project is close by planning a meeting next week involving concerned parties. - A plan released by the Patrick administration would allow more than 200 wind turbines in Massachusetts coastal waters by using zoning rules to develop renewable energy projects. -- On Wednesday, officers responded to a 9-1-1 call reporting a suspicious looking plastic bag in the area of Princeton Street in East Boston. The bag, reported to be the size of a laundry bag, was discovered to contain the body of what appeared to be a female in her 30’s. The police are trying to determine her identity. -- A knife-wielding East Boston man was shot and killed by Lynn police this morning after a foot pursuit, authorities say. Michael Addesa, 34, was pronounced dead at 2:45am after being transported to Salem Hospital.
